Chance Harbor is a picturesque town located in the northern area of Virgina. After learning of the return of Lorena, whom is soon revealed to be The Original Witch who placed the curse among all vampires to be bound by the sun and towards all werewolves to shift only during the full moon. During Season 4, Eric and Kristina travel to Chance Harbor, Virginia to reconcile with an old friend whom apparently knows the way to end the destructible wrath of Lorena. Their old companion's name is Grant whom is also a vampire. Over the centuries, he's been able to collect dozens of deceased witches grimoires and study each of their attainments.

- Due to legal conflict, the town was named Chance Harbor instead of New Salem within the novels.
- In the novels the town is on a small island with a bridge conecting it to the mainland, but its impiled from the TV series that it's on the mainland.
- New Salem is on the East Coast in the books while Chance Harbor is located on the western coast.
